Sam Darnold's Battle With Mono: A Health Crisis

A Conversation with Lisa Salters

An Exclusive Interview

New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold has been diagnosed with mononucleosis, an infectious disease that can cause a number of symptoms, including fatigue, fever, sore throat, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes.

The Jets announced the diagnosis on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2019, and said Darnold would miss Monday night's game against the Cleveland Browns.

Jets head coach Adam Gase said Darnold had been feeling sick for a few days and had been tested for mononucleosis. The results of the test came back positive on Thursday.

There is no specific cure for mononucleosis, and treatment is focused on relieving symptoms.

Most people recover from mononucleosis within a few weeks, but some people may experience fatigue for several months.

In an exclusive interview with ESPN's Lisa Salters, Darnold discussed his battle with mono:

"I've been feeling really tired and run down for the past few days," Darnold said. "I'm starting to feel a little better, but I'm still not 100%."
"I'm just trying to take it one day at a time and get back on the field as soon as possible," Darnold said.

Darnold's absence is a major blow to the Jets, who are already without running back Le'Veon Bell, who is serving a two-game suspension.

The Jets are scheduled to play the New England Patriots in Week 3, and it is unclear if Darnold will be healthy enough to play in that game.

In the meantime, the Jets will turn to Luke Falk to start at quarterback.

Falk, a second-year player who was acquired from the Tennessee Titans in a trade in August, has never started an NFL game.
