Democrat fends off challenge from Republican Scott Jensen

Walz wins by a comfortable margin, cementing Democratic control of the state

Democrat Tim Walz has won a second term as Minnesota's governor, defeating Republican opponent Scott Jensen by a comfortable margin. With 99% of precincts reporting, Walz led Jensen by 53% to 45%. The victory cements Democratic control of the state, as Walz becomes the first Democrat to win three consecutive gubernatorial elections since Rudy Perpich in the 1980s.

Walz, a former congressman and teacher, has been praised for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and his commitment to progressive policies. He has also been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump. Jensen, a physician and former state senator, ran on a platform of conservative values and opposition to Walz's policies.

The race was closely watched as a test of the strength of the Democratic and Republican parties in Minnesota. In recent years, the state has become increasingly divided along partisan lines, with Democrats controlling the governor's office, the state legislature, and the U.S. Senate seat held by Amy Klobuchar. Republicans, meanwhile, control the state's two U.S. House seats and have made gains in the state legislature.

Walz's victory is a significant setback for Republicans, who had hoped to regain control of the governor's office for the first time since 2010. It also gives Democrats a boost heading into the 2022 midterm elections, when they will be defending control of the U.S. House and Senate.
