Al Jazeera Journalist Shireen Abu Akleh Killed by Israeli Army
Outcry over the Killing of Al Jazeera Journalist
Qatari-funded News Outlet Condemns the Attack
The Israeli army has killed Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in cold blood, sparking outrage and condemnation from around the world.
Abu Akleh, a veteran reporter who had been covering the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for more than two decades, was shot in the head while reporting on an Israeli raid in the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday.
Al Jazeera, which is funded in whole or in part by the Qatari government, has condemned the attack as a "blatant murder" and called for an international investigation.
"This is a clear case of extrajudicial killing," said Al Jazeera's director general, Ahmed al-Ansari. "Shireen was a highly respected journalist who was simply doing her job. Her death is a tragedy and a violation of international law."
The Israeli army has claimed that Abu Akleh was killed in a crossfire between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants. However, eyewitnesses and Al Jazeera's own investigation have cast doubt on this claim.
The killing of Abu Akleh has sparked widespread anger and protests. Journalists around the world have called for an end to the violence against reporters and for the perpetrators of this heinous crime to be brought to justice.
