Aurora Borealis Expected in Texas Skies

Unusual Sight for Southern US

For the first time in decades, Texans may be able to see the aurora borealis, or northern lights, with the naked eye this weekend. The National Weather Service has issued an aurora watch for the northern Panhandle and Amarillo, with a chance of visibility as far south as Lubbock and Dallas. This is an unusual occurrence, as the aurora borealis is typically only visible in the far northern latitudes.

Solar Storm Causes Aurora

The aurora borealis is caused by a solar storm that sends charged particles into the Earth's atmosphere. These particles interact with the Earth's magnetic field and create a colorful light show in the sky. The strongest solar storm in more than 20 years is responsible for the current aurora activity.

A map from the Space Weather Prediction Center shows that the aurora may be visible for much of the northern half of the United States this weekend, including parts of Texas. The aurora is most likely to be visible after midnight and in areas with clear skies.
